teachinginNov

Here’s a guide to the Thanksgiving products we have on offer in our shop!

tgatwThanksgiving Around the World
Cut ‘n’ Stick Interactive Workbook

This packet includes studies of five holidays similar to American Thanksgiving with a focus on the harvest and giving thanks. They include Pongal in India, Sukkot in Israel, Thanksgiving in Canada, Chuseok in South Korea, and Zhong Qiu Jie in China.

We wrote a blog post explaining the different parts of this packet last year so please check out that post here.

Thanksgiving_FoNFFocus on Non-Fiction: Thanksgiving
We completed this packet just a few days ago! It’s a mini pack in our Focus on Non-Fiction series which includes the following eight topics: The first Thanksgiving, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, The National Turkey Presentation, the Pilgrims, Sarah Josepha Hale, Squanto, Thanksgiving foods and turkeys.

LRS_HM_ThePilgrimsestsThe Story of the Pilgrims
These two products can be used together or separately for lessons about the Pilgrims and their role in American Thanksgiving history. ‘The Story of the Pilgrims‘ explains who the Pilgrims were, their voyage to the New World, and their connection to the Thanksgiving tradition. Like all of our History Makers sets, the story is presented on two pages with illustrations, provided in color and black and white. There are also many comprehension worksheets based on the text.
The Pilgrims Craftivities includes templates to make four different craftivities: a flip book, shape book, ring book and character writing display.

LRS_Turkey_Glyph-1Gobble Gobble Turkey Glyph
We’ve recently been revising our glyphs, including our Gobble Gobble Turkey Glyph. We’ve redone the instructions in a step-by-step fashion and simplified the templates. A great activity that incorporates mathematics, reading and art!

thanksgivingonthursThanksgiving on Thursday by Mary Pope Osborne
Finally, we have a novel study for “Thanksgiving on Thursday” which is the 27th book in the Magic Tree House series. Great for junior readers!

Guest Post – Happy Happy Halloween by Andrea

guestblogger_iconAndrea, who reviewed our Focus on Fiction Seasonal Reading Passages last year has shared her experience using another one of our products with her students – our Happy, Happy Halloween pack!

Halloweenpackinuse

happyhappyhalloweenI used the Happy, Happy Halloween packet with my second graders who need help with comprehension strategies.

Since the passage in the packet was easy to read, we were able to work on comprehension strategies and not on decoding. We talked about the dialogue and how it works with the story. After reading the story, we worked on answering the comprehension questions by highlighting where we found our answers in the passage. The students also put the events of the story in order. Instead of just writing the numbers in the blanks, we cut the events out and put them in the correct order to help them make sure they were correct. The students also practiced alphabetical order with the page from the packet.

I did not use all parts of the packet with the students because we were not working on those specific skills, but I love that it included other parts like quotation marks, inferences, and writing prompts. Students also have the opportunity to be creative and create jack-o-lanterns, which I will do with my students over the course of this week.

Thanks again for sharing with us, Andrea!
